For far too long, October has been tied to a myth: that this land was “discovered.” But the truth is, this land has always been alive with culture, spirit, and community.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a time to honor the original stewards of these lands — to uplift their resilience, acknowledge their ongoing presence, and recommit ourselves to living in balance with the Earth.

Here in Charlotte and Salisbury, we live on the ancestral lands of tribes including the Catawba Nation, the Cheraw, and other Siouan-speaking peoples who cared for these rivers, forests, and hills long before colonization. Their descendants are still here, preserving their culture, language, and ceremonies despite centuries of attempted erasure.

This day is not about commerce — it’s about community, reflection, and respect.
